Speeding Causes Nearly Half of Kansas's Fatal Crashes During the Holidays
A Wichita Car Accident Lawyer Discusses the Problem
Holiday celebrations in Kansas too often end in heartbreak because some people carelessly drive too fast. Innocent lives are lost at what is supposed to be one of the most joyful times of the year when too often the holiday rush ends in holiday tragedy.
Car accidents caused by speeding drivers can result in long-term physical, emotional and financial impacts. But fatal accidents around the holidays carry an even heavier burden on surviving loved ones. For years to come, the holiday season will be a tragic reminder of who is missing from family celebrations.
Fatal Crash Statistics for Kansas During the Holidays
When it comes to fatal accidents caused by speeding drivers over the holidays, Kansas ranks among the most dangerous states in the nation. A recent analysis by ValuePenguin shows the state tied with four others – Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming – with 46% of fatal crashes during the holidays involving a speeding driver. That percentage tied for second, trailing only Rhode Island at 55%.
The study analyzed the data in each state around Thanksgiving and Christmas from 2010 to 2019 (the most recent available data). In Kansas, the statistics showed 74 people died around Christmas, compared to 49 around Thanksgiving.
It’s worth noting that speeding in Kansas is not limited to someone simply driving over the limit. Under the state’s “basic speed law,” motorists who drive “at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual hazards then existing." Under the law, for example, driving 55 mph in a 55-mph zone at night can be considered speeding if the road is icy.
